Description
Cleyera is a fast-growing, large shrub or small tree that features attractive, glossy evergreen foliage. The colorful new growth produced throughout the season emerges in shades of burgundy, orange, and red. Cleyera is an excellent substitute for the disease-prone Red Tip Photinia.
GROWING
Japanese Cleyera is easy to grow in a range of soils and full sun to part shade. They prefer moist but well-drained soil however are exceptionally tolerant of dry soil conditions when established. They do not require pruning, however can be pruned to a formal shape or to form a small tree.
PLANTING
When planted right and in the right spot, Cleyera shrubs are very easy to grow in the ground and in containers.
Soil Preferences
Cleyera will tolerate a wide range of soils. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic.
Light Preferences
Cleyera will grow in full sun, however, will tolerate a fair amount of shade. The shrub grows faster and more dense with more sun. We recommend at least 5 hours of direct sunlight. All-day lightly filtered sun is fine.
WATERING
When establishing a root system, Cleyera prefers moist but well-drained soil. When established, they are very drought tolerant and rarely if ever require supplemental irrigation.
