Nikko Blue Hydrangea will mature to a height and width of 4 to 6 feet in a mounded shape. Flowers are produced on the previous year’s growth. Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’ prefers partial sun conditions in moist, well-drained soils. Plant it in a sheltered location away from prevailing winds in windier locations. This shrub generally doesn’t need pruning. Prune out weak or winter-damaged stems in late winter/early spring. If shaping is desired, cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds after the flowering period has ended.
Space individual plants 4 feet apart, center on center to create a garden border. In a mass planting, space 6 feet apart. When planting in a garden planter, use a container at least 36 inches wide with drainage holes.
